Fish Frys

The Little Nut Hut
Located statewide

classicwisconsin et the best fish fry of its fish eatin' life the other night.

Really? Was it the very best? The best of the best?

Yeah. It was at Scott's cottage, the Little Nut Hut, located on Lake Butternut, north of Park Falls. If that sounds familiar -- Little Nut Hut -- it's probably because you've seen the original Little Nut Hut in your neighborhood tavern.

Little Nut Huts are nut dispensers that look like miniature two-stall boathouses. If your tavern is on top of things, its Little Nut Hut will contain a working light bulb. If you are visiting a tavern with a Little Nut Hut whose light bulb has expired, please ask the proprietor to replace the bulb as soon as possible. A Little Nut Hut with a burnt-out bulb defeats the whole purpose of a Little Nut Hut. Nuts have to be kept warm, especially during Packer games.

Little Nut Huts usually have two compartments, one for mixed nuts and one for a single type of nut…pistachios or cashews or corn nuts, for example. (Well, pistachios might be too expensive for the Little Nut Hut -- pecans, cashews or beer nuts are more likely.) For its 2002 public service campaign, classicwisconsin is distributing, free of charge, 10-watt light bulbs to Wisconsin taverns with needy Little Nut Huts.

The hard part is waiting for the nuts to warm up after the bulb has been replaced. That's why classicwisconsin is so beloved as a corporate citizen, because classicwisconsin is replacing, free of charge, Little Nut Hut bulbs to prevent this excruciating experience from occurring during the 4th quarter. Like classicwisconsin says, we say, if just one person benefits from warm nuts, then it's all worthwhile.

Scott's Little Nut Hut does not contain a Little Nut Hut. But he had pounds of walleye, perch and blue gill from the lake, and an outdoor deep fryer and cases of Millers and a campfire and Northern Lights and crazy-ass loons hooting all around the damn place. God, it was beautiful. Even the damn bats fit right in, though there were so many bats swooping overhead it was like the Battle of Britain all over again.

Scott really doesn't want all of you visiting Scott's Little Nut Hut, so classicwisconsin hopes you can find your own secret getaway. God, it'll be beautiful.

Aw hell, you know that.

More nuts...

One fish:
What did you expect from a couple of deep fryers and a bag of frozen cod? At least they tried.

Two fish:
For a Friday night it's better than eating fish sticks on your couch.

Three fish:
Typical Wisconsin fish fry at a supper club or tavern. Involves a crowded bar and a Packers schedule on the wall (extra credit if the game scores are filled-in).

Four fish:
Member, classicwisconsin Shanty of Fame. An irresistible combination of atmosphere and fish.
