2005 Top Shanty Runner Up |
||||||||||||||||
Ray Gray claims this will be the final shanty he constructs.
“I’ve been building them for many years,” he writes. “Does Noah ring a bell?” Experience like that must be honored. When the fish aren’t biting, the unique exterior provides reading material – printing plates from a newspaper are mounted on the plywood walls. The windows are extra strong, Gray notes. “Have you ever seen the damage a flying bluegill can do?” But the hospitality found inside Gray’s “Cabin on the Lake” is what brought a tear to Classic Wisconsin’s eye. Then the tear froze and caused frostbite on Classic Wisconsin’s cheek. “The essence of a shanty is to say welcome, come by, let’s chat and fish a bit,” Gray wrote. “Shanties are like lighthouses on ice, truly a port in the storm. “Fishable comfort for four, be it an hour or a day on the ice. Four covered fishing stations are provided. Shanty is fully insulated, vented, ample overhead cabinets, carpeted with many windows for viewing people, tip ups, and events. The heat is provided by a wall- mounted adjustable gas furnace. Hot food service is prepared on a 40-year old two-burner iron gas stove. Order coffee, grits? What are your needs? Venison to hot dogs, we provide it.”
